Sunrise Wind is New York’s largest offshore wind farm, designed to generate 924 MW of clean energy and power approximately 600,000 homes across the state. Grace Industries (Grace) was contracted to complete the onshore underground duct bank system.
This project included the furnishing and installation of approximately 17.5 miles of single-circuit 320-kV Direct Current (DC) Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE) duct bank, extending from the Transition Joint Bay (TJB) at Smith Point County Park to the new Sunrise Wind Onshore AC/DC Converter Station. In addition, the scope included installation of a 1.1-mile double-circuit 138-kV Alternating Current (AC) duct bank connecting the converter station to the existing Holbrook Substation.
The TJB vault serves as the critical transition point between offshore and onshore cables. To complete the system, Grace installed 34 splice vaults and 36 handholes along the export cable route, as well as 4 splice vaults and 8 handholes along the interconnect route.
Restoration efforts included curb-to-curb asphalt resurfacing of impacted roadways, along with landscape restoration and plantings. The installation also required six trenchless crossings beneath highways, railroads, and bodies of water.
