Haugland Energy (HE) was contracted by PSEG-LI for the expansion of the 33kV substation and the raising of all equipment within the substation, as it was located in a flood zone. Following Superstorm Sandy, PSEG-LI identified that the Rockaway Beach substation was in a flood zone. The equipment on this project was elevated six (6) feet above grade to strengthen the reliability of the system.
Due to groundwater conditions, over 75 minipiles were installed with pier caps to support the pier foundations and slabs. The expansion of the substation included all site work, below-grade conduits, grounding, trenching, and foundations. HE also performed all above-grade work, including the procurement and installation of steel structures, and the installation of customer-owned 33kV transformers, 15kV switchgear, a battery enclosure, gas circuit breakers, circuit switchers, and disconnect switches, along with all overhead aluminum tube bus and associated soft taps.
Wiring of the SCADA system included all relay panels, internal wiring, field wiring, and the DC battery system. The substation remained in service during all construction activities, with all work performed under clearances.
