Keys Energy selected Haugland Energy to replace station insulators on Line 6 (138kV) structures in Summerland Key, Florida. The assembly replacements were performed while the transmission lines were energized. Haugland Energy replaced six post insulators on Line 6, which is the sole transmission line feeding the Florida Keys; therefore, it could not be interrupted, requiring the team to work while the lines were energized.
Due to reduced clearances and structure heights, as well as the need to remove the crossarm to access insulator mounting hardware, Haugland Energy utilized the Line Wise TLL 2000 to hold energized phases while the work was performed. The work area was also extremely congested due to its proximity to US Route 1 and nearby businesses that needed to remain unimpeded during construction. Barehand work was required to install new armor rods on the conductors and insulator attachment hardware once the conductors were removed from the insulators and spread.
