Haugland Energy (HE) was awarded the full engineering, procurement, and construction of the substation, enclosed within a newly built structure that meets both Con Edison’s and the Port Authority’s requirements. Two 27kV feeders enter the substation and step down to a 26-section, 5kV lineup that serves businesses throughout JFK Airport.
The project began with providing the Port Authority a series of alternative designs in collaboration with the engineering team. Once the final design was approved, design and procurement activities commenced. Extensive studies of the existing distribution system were conducted to develop execution plans for upgrades and cutovers from the old system to the new system.
Specialty subcontractors were engaged as needed, while the majority of the work was self-performed by Haugland Group. Key scopes included pile work, foundations, site drainage, utility relocations, green roof construction, and ductbank installation.
