As I grew up, the construction industry fascinated me. My interest was sparked by an uncle, an electrician who worked in the field. This led me to pursue the engineering side of the industry, majoring in Construction Management Engineering Technology at Farmingdale State College. It was during my college years I learned about the safety aspects of construction. I realized I didn’t want to sit behind a desk, I wanted to be out in the field, able to see the work performed up close. I’m now doing that as a Safety Coordinator at Haugland Group.

After graduating, I was fortunate to have secured an internship at Haugland. This opportunity provided me with the skills needed to advance in the industry. During the internship, I gained valuable hands-on experience and made connections with company field personnel. And now, two years later, I’ve acquired my certifications and training including STSC (Safety Trained Supervisor Construction), first aid & CPR, OSHA 30, as well as New York State’s four-hour sediment & erosion control training. At Haugland, I conduct toolbox talks, safety walk-throughs, and ensure employees are using PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). I also make sure we’re in compliance with jobsite requirements and submit daily reports.

Being a Safety Coordinator comes with a tremendous responsibility. It’s taken me to locations across the country supporting our storm response teams, as well the US Virgin Islands. My advice to people who want a career in the safety field is to have resilience, passion, and enthusiasm for the job. Haugland Group’s safety culture is top notch and touches all levels of the company. It’s a great environment to be part of and one that supports the advancement of my career goals.
