Substation Superintendent – New England Territory

Haugland Group, a privately owned Long Island, New York-based civil infrastructure and energy construction company has an immediate opportunity for an experienced Electrical Substation Superintendent to join our team. This position will be based out of our New England territory.

Key Functions

  • Provide guidance, leadership, mentorship, and direct supervision of site staff including assistant superintendents, foremen, electricians, technicians, laborers, and other construction personnel involved in substation construction and maintenance activities.
  • Manage project schedule including preparation of weekly two-week look ahead schedules and coordination of construction activities to maintain project milestones.
  • Proactively schedule and coordinate subcontractors, vendors, and internal crews to ensure completion of substation projects in accordance with project schedule and contract requirements.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of project strategy and commitments including financial goals, scheduling, logistics, phasing, switching requirements, commissioning milestones, and inspections.
  • Oversee construction and installation of high-voltage substation equipment including transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, bus systems, grounding systems, relay panels, protection systems, and control wiring.
  • Coordinate with utility representatives, engineering teams, and system operations to support planned outages, switching procedures, and energization activities.
  • Ensure assigned job site operations comply with utility standards engineering specifications, electrical codes, and project quality requirements.
  • Manage labor force productivity and ensure proper utilization of craft labor, subcontractors, and specialty electrical crews.
  • Coordinate equipment and material deliveries including transformers, breakers, steel structures, conduit systems, relay panels, and protection equipment.
  • Demonstrate and maintain effective communication with the project team regarding changes in work, job conditions, subcontractor relations, switching schedules, and deviations in project scope.
  • Work in partnership with project management to maintain an accurate and updated project schedule that reflects field conditions and supports cost and schedule targets.
  • Run weekly coordination meetings including project meetings, subcontractor meetings, and safety briefings.
  • Initiate and manage the RFI process, identifying field conflicts and proposing solutions related to design, constructability, or operational requirements.
  • Support substation testing, commissioning, and energization activities in coordination with engineering, protection & controls teams, and utility operators.
  • Exceed client expectations by understanding utility client needs, system reliability priorities, and project delivery standards.
  • Promote strong subcontractor relationships through professional and fair leadership across all project participants.
  • Maintain and review punch list processes to ensure completion of substation equipment installation, testing, and commissioning items.
  • Manage project close-out including documentation, as-built drawings, commissioning records, and warranty support.

Desired Qualifications

  • 5–10 years’ experience in electrical infrastructure construction, with significant experience in high-voltage substation construction or utility transmission projects.
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Construction Management, Engineering Technology, or related field, or commensurate experience preferred.
  • Experience working with electric utilities
  • Strong knowledge of high-voltage substation systems (69kV–345kV) including protection & controls, grounding, and commissioning processes.
  • Excellent communication abilities including writing, speaking, and active listening.
  • Knowledge of construction budgeting, scheduling, and project controls best practices.
  • Effective leadership abilities including motivation, goal setting, crew development, and conflict resolution.
  • Strong organizational skills including time management, delegation, prioritization, and multitasking in fast-paced construction environments.

Why Haugland?

Compensation range for this role is $120,000 – $190,000.
