WORKFORCE & COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
As a laborer and traffic controller for Grace Industries with Local 731, my primary role is to ensure the safety of traffic, pedestrians, and our crew. My career has involved flagging on both busy highways and small streets in New York, focusing on maintaining a safe working environment.
I was drawn to this career because it isn’t overly demanding, and the reward lies in keeping people safe. I enjoy working outdoors and having a degree of control over my tasks. However, the job comes with challenges, such as standing for long periods and, as a woman, sometimes being the only female on the crew. Access to restrooms can be an issue, but working for a company that respects and accommodates women’s needs is crucial.
I would recommend this career path to women, emphasizing that it offers a good salary and is not stressful if you work for a supportive company like Grace. Punctuality and following instructions are key. I would say anyone coming into this field needs to know that it’s definitely worth it. As a woman that has family to take care of and children to put through college, the unions have programs that you can, get scholarships for your children and much more.
Living in Nassau County, I really appreciate the convenience of working locally. However, the job can be challenging at times due to traffic and public interactions, so staying alert is vital for everyone’s safety. Patience and attention to detail are essential skills for this job.
