The Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) is a first-of-its-kind electric transmission project spanning 339 miles from the Canada–U.S. border to New York City, playing a critical role in advancing New York’s transition to clean energy by delivering renewable hydropower directly into the city. Under contract with Kiewit, Eastern Utilities Services (EUS) supported this high-profile initiative by installing over 100,000 linear feet of 8” FPVC via horizontal directional drilling (HDD).
Eastern executed approximately 100 individual HDD installations ranging from 600 to 3,500 linear feet, navigating complex and varied subsurface conditions including soft clay and extremely hard rock. Each location required parallel installations, adding to the technical complexity of the work. In addition to drilling operations, EUS furnished and fused all FPVC and HDPE piping for the project. The comprehensive HDD scope is expected to be completed over a duration of more than two years, contributing to the successful delivery of this landmark clean energy infrastructure project.
